Calling All Bisexuals — Especially Conference-Lovers
February 8th, 2007Here’s news about a fabulous LGBT conference coming up next month, and they are looking for workshops on bisexual topics! If you’re bi and you have something to say about it, submit a workshop proposal. Last year, they had two workshops on bisexuality — let’s make sure they have even more to offer this time around. Here are the details:
The 2007 Unity Conference is currently seeking workshop proposals for its fifth annual event to be held March 30 - April 1, 2007 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Last year’s event welcomed over 300 participants from ten different states. We fully expect to grow our event this spring and invite you to participate!
With the theme “Outlawing Orgasm: Sex, Disease, and the Policing of Pleasure,” the Steering Committee has chosen to focus this year’s event on examining the movements for sexual rights and sexual pleasure-that is, the right to determine if, when, with whom, and under what conditions one decides to pursue sexual pleasure. We believe the right to sexual freedom to be a fundamental human right.
To that end, we have invited a broad range of performers, educators, and human rights advocates from diverse activist backgrounds to lead workshops and address the full conference. Participants can look forward to workshop sessions and keynote addresses from notable spoken word artists Alix Olson and Sarwat Rumi, as well as from transgender media specialist Andy Marra. Unity 2007 will also feature comedian Robin Tyler, activist Loretta Ross, and writer Patrick Califia.
We have reserved space for 30 different workshop sessions over the weekend. With this year’s theme we hope to provide a wide range of workshops dealing with practical and theoretical issues. We envision such engaging sessions as “Sex Toys 101″ and “Anal Pleasure” as well as topics like “Bush’s War on Sex.” Unity will also include a core workshop track on fundamental issues such as sexism and racism in LGBTIQ communities, biphobia, and transphobia.
To submit a workshop proposal, please visit the Unity website at www.unc.edu/glbtsa/unity. By clicking on the “workshops” tab it is possible to download the appropriate form. Please email your completed form as a Word document to unity2007@gmail.com.
Submissions for workshop proposals must be received by March 1, 2007, and will be accepted on a rolling basis. Workshops that are received earliest and that relate to the theme “Outlawing Orgasm: Sex, Disease, and the Policing of Pleasure” will receive highest priority.
Thank you, and we hope to see you at Unity 2007!
Cheers,
Win Chesson
