Big Bisexual Hugs!
November 11th, 2007What a fabulous bisexual weekend this has been! The Bay Area Bisexual Network celebrated its 20th year anniversary at a gala brunch, featuring state Senator (and out lesbian) Carole Migden, as well as journalists/ writers, other politicians, filmmakers, activists, and tons of other fabulous LGBT (emphasis on the B) folks. The whole thing was organized by my bi mentor and she-ro, Lani Ka’ahumanu. There were over 100 people in attendance, and one of the most exciting parts of the event was that I received a Maggi Rubenstein Leadership Award! It was such an honor, to be recognized as a bi community leader! Dr. Rubenstein herself presented the award to me. My friend Lindasusan also received one, so we got to share the stage together. What a treat! I will post photos of the event soon…
Also a lot of fun was getting to be the first speaker of the Bi Visibility Project at UC Davis, where I presented on bisexual and transgender representations in film, for a packed audience, as part of the Trans Action Week at the school. Thanks a million to Kim for organizing the whole thing. I had a blast! UC Davis students are smart, engaged, and eager to learn more about bi and trans lives — I couldn’t have asked for a better audience. I got to show them my film, On My Skin/ En Mi Piel. By the way, if you want a copy of this film, contact me!
The whole weekend felt like a big bisexual hug. Who says there’s no such thing as bi community?! Newsflash: you’re living in it. Or, at least, I am. Join me, won’t you?
I got to end the weekend hanging out with my friend Dylan, another amazing trans activist/ nonprofiteer. (Thanks, Dylan, for all your advice!) If you don’t know about Dylan’s work, check out his Trannymals website. These are the cutest genital-pets ever…
And now, I’m off to find a place to hang my Leadership Award certificate! Bi-bi… (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)
