Stanford Wrap-up and a Jewish Feminist Reading Event
April 19th, 2009First of all, speaking at Stanford University Medical School this week was so much fun! I gave a talk entitled “Why Bisexuals Have Worse Health than Gays & Lesbians — And What We Can Do about All Health Disparities,” based on the book I co-authored, Bisexual Health (2007: National Gay & Lesbian Task Force). Those Stanford students really know how to push the envelope on a topic. They were so engaged with the lecture. That is always the best feeling for me, because it becomes less of a lecture and more a dialogue. We got some good work done.
I want to tell you about my next speaking engagement. It also looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and a very interesting event. It’s called Feminism and Spirituality: Jewish Women Read Their Work, and it’s taking place at the Afikomen Judaica store in Berkeley on May 3rd from 3 - 4 p.m. The address is 3042 Claremont Ave., so if you’re in the area, please stop by. Click this link to see the flyer with all the details.
I’ll be reading from a piece I published in Bridges: A Jewish Feminist Journal, titled “Second Glances.” It’s an essay I co-authored with my friend Nzinga, about our experiences as African American Jews. She converted, and I was born Jewish, and we kind of do a compare-and-contrast thing, looking at race politics in the Jewish community and how we’ve navigated the different ways other Jews have responded to our claiming of Jewish identity. We titled it “Second Glances” to reference the fact that we get a lot of double-takes when we tell people we’re Jewish.
So, come and check that out, and I look forward to seeing you there!
